Front End Web Developer

Lichfield – Up to £35,000 per year

Existent is a dynamo for enthusiasm and creativity, dedicated to the creation of innovative brands and services, providing expertise to consumers and the media. Guided by values of integrity, fairness and the desire to innovate, we do business the human way in order to achieve the remarkable.

Increasingly successful in our chosen sectors, we’re anticipating continued and accelerated growth and so we’re expanding our teams across the board.

About the role

Our increasing success and anticipated future growth is providing us with an opportunity to define and build our next-generation web publishing and analytics platform. In support of this, we’re currently looking for a front end developer to expand our team and bring the benefit of their technical knowledge and commercial development experience.

The Front End Developer will not only help maintain our existing systems, but be instrumental in the decision making process as we define and build our next-generation platform.

Adept at communicating your ideas, you will not only collaborate internally with our designers and back-end developers, but also more widely with our content, marketing and commercial teams, in order to distil user requirements and help make them a fully responsive reality.

You will review your peers’ work in an engaging, collaborative environment, and will respond positively to the critique of others. You will strive to produce clean and efficient code, whilst retaining a pragmatic viewpoint when faced with legacy issues and tight deadlines.

This role represents an excellent opportunity to grow with and contribute to an increasingly important team within an exciting young company. If you’re looking to apply your years of experience where you can really make a lasting contribution, this could be the role.

About you

You’re a highly experienced and knowledgeable front end developer with significant experience working within a commercial environment.

You’re looking for a role in a setting where you can make a significant and lasting contribution, free from the limitations of larger organisations. Accordingly, you’ll have the flexibility and adaptability essential to thrive within in a fast changing and responsive environment.

You are also a natural problem solver, with a passion for creating clean, elegant solutions to complex technical issues whilst appreciating business motivations and user intent – both internal and external.

You have the strength of character to work around legacy issues whilst striving to correct these where timescales allow.

You maintain a close interest in and follow developments in front end programming paradigms and technology.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Contributing to the front end codebase of our next generation, component based web publishing platform

  • Translating the vision of the design team into a reality and coding that reality in a responsive fashion

  • Contributing to the upkeep of our legacy platform, until such time as our new platform is ready for us to migrate to. This requires the ability to navigate through PHP classes with ease

  • Review and testing of code

Skills and experience

  • At least five years front end development experience in a commercial environment

  • Strong HTML5, CSS3, SASS and JavaScript including jQuery

  • AJAX and XML or JSON

  • Responsive Web Design, Bootstrap 3

  • Confidence using Linux shell commands

  • In addition, you’ll need to know your way round PHP and Rails

You’ll likely be degree or post-graduate educated, and/or with a minimum of five years equivalent top-flight experience demonstrating a solid, proven track record. Any interesting history is an advantage – we love a colourful character and a good story.

Starting with 25 days annual leave per year, we’ll give you an extra day every year, up to 30 days. On top of this, we’ll give you your birthday off, and the three days between Christmas and New Year. We also offer private medical cover, a company pension scheme, and free fruit in the office.

We have a friendly, creative and collaborative working environment, and are located in the centre of Lichfield – a small, historic and well-connected cathedral city. We’re just half an hour by train from Central Birmingham, and under an hour and a half from London Euston.
